Introdução

Trance é o nome dado a um subtipo, mais um estilo, da música electrónica desenvolvido e popularizado ao longo da década de 1990.

Criado na Alemanha no fim da década de 80, por Paul Van Dyk, Dr. Motte e Torsten Stenzel. Já na década de 2000 surgiram outros grupos e Dj's de Trance entre eles se destacam DJ Tiësto e Trance the sound of dream
Geralmente caracterizado pela batida entre 130 e 160 bpm, destaca-se pelas repetidas frases melódicas geradas por sintetizadores, e uma estrutura que alterna momentos crescentes e decrescentes ao longo da música. Às vezes vocais são incorporados. Questionavelmente, o estilo é derivado de uma combinação de techno e house, também sofrendo uma forte influência do Goa Trance.
“Trance” recebeu esse nome pelas repetitivas e opiáceas batidas, e as vibrantes melodias nas quais presumidamente colocam seus ouvintes em um estado de transe.
Este é um dos estilos de música electrónica mais populares por todo o mundo hoje em dia, estando centrado na Europa o maior número de adeptos.

Origens
Ao longo da década de 70, Klaus Schulze gravou vários álbuns de música electrónica caracterizados pelo ambiente atmosférico e o uso de “sequencers”. Em alguns dos álbuns da década de 80, a palavra “trance” era incluída nos títulos, como o de 1981 Trancefer e 1987 En=Trance.
Elementos que se tornaram característicos da trance music também foram explorados por artistas do género industrial da música electrónica no final da década de 80. O objectivo era produzir sons de efeitos hipnóticos aos ouvintes, isso também poderia levar a um alto grau de estado de transe ou euforia.
Esses artistas do género industrial eram associados à cultura rave, embora muitos já mostravam interesse no Goa Trance, no qual o som é mais “pesado” comparado ao som que agora é conhecido como Trance. Muitos dos álbuns produzidos por artistas industriais eram em sua grande maioria experimentais, e não tinham o intuito de originar um género musical com uma cultura associada. Com o Trance dominando a cultura rave, a maior parte desses artistas abandonaram o estilo.

Trance como género musical
As primeiras gravações realizadas começaram não exactamente com a cena Trance, e sim pelo Acid House originário do Reino Unido (UK), mais precisamente pela banda The KLF. Eles utilizaram o termo “pure trance” para designar algumas gravações que na verdade eram versões, e que fizeram um grande sucesso comercial no ano de 1991.
Além deste nascimento no Reino Unido pode também ser mencionado o começo do género Trance em clubes alemães durante os meados da década de 90 como uma ramificação do techno. Frankfurt frequentemente é citada como o berço do Trance. DJ Dag (Dag Lerner), Oliver Lieb, Sven Väth e Torsten Stenzel, são considerados pioneiros e produziram várias músicas utilizando diversos nomes artísticos.

Trance Europeu
O Trance Europeu é uma vertente do trance que é mais ligada ao House, por construção musical. Muitas vezes encaixam-se melodias vocais muito parecidas com as utilizadas no House Europeu, o que torna esse estilo de trance, uma música mais alegre, dançante e própria para rodar em rádios. Seria o trance pop.

Trance Melódico
Trance melódico é um outro ramo do macro-género Trance. É o estilo de Trance mais difundido actualmente no mundo e usa, além de uma batida envolvente, muitos teclados para criar a melodia.

Trance Minimalista
O Trance minimal, é uma vertente do Trance extremamente detalhista, onde os pequenos detalhes são valorizados ao máximo. Com muito menos elementos que o Trance progressivo, o Minimal é a mais "silenciosa" das vertentes do Trance Music.

Trance Progressivo
O Trance progressivo, é uma vertente mais calma e com menos elementos que o Trance psicadélico. O Trance progressivo, como já diz o nome, tem como sua característica principal, o fato de que, com o passar dos compassos, a música irá progredindo, ou seja, irão sendo adicionados mais elementos. A música também é mais marcada e com um swing muito menos linear que o Trance normal. O Trance progressivo tem actualmente fortes influências do House music americano; mas é um estilo de música proveniente da Europa.

Trance psicadélico
O Trance Psicadélico (referido frequentemente como Psy Trance) é uma forma de música Trance (um estilo de música electrónica), desenvolvida no fim dos anos 80. O Trance tem uma batida rápida, entre 135 e 150 batidas por minuto (bpm), além da batida forte de kick, num compasso 4x4, que algumas vezes difere da batida do Techno por ter um alcance de frequência um pouco mais alto além dos sons graves. O Goa Trance original geralmente era feito com sintetizadores modulares e samplers de Hardware, mas a preferência no Trance Psicadélico se direccionou para a manipulação de samples e armazenamento em programas de sampleamento VST e AU.
O uso de sintetizadores analógicos para a síntese sonora deu lugar aos instrumentos "Analógicos Virtuais" digitais como o Nord Lead, Access Virus, Korg MS-2000, Roland JP-8000 e os plugins de computador VST e AU como o Native Instruments Reaktor. Esses geralmente controlados por um sequenciador MIDI dentro de um programa de Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). O Psy Trance é freqüentemente tocado em festivais ao ar livre. É freqüente os festivais durarem vários dias, com a música tocando 24 horas por dia.

Dark Psytrance
O Dark Psytrance é um estilo de música onde os efeitos electrónicos são voltados para a ala mais "Obscura" dos elementos Psicadélicos existentes no Psytrance.

Hard Trance
O Hard Trance veio do grande crescimento da música trance, que criou subgéneros mais complexos com batidas pesadas e velozes. A Hypnotrance (outro nome) saiu da mistura entre o Trance e o Hardcore.

Paul Van Dyk (Eisenhüettenstadt, 16 de dezembro de 1971) é um dos mais importantes DJs de música trance da actualidade.
Nascido com o nome de Matthias Paul, foi criado em Berlim Oriental, tendo pequenos contactos com o mundo capitalista, por meio cassetes e rádio, onde descobriu artistas como “The Smiths” e “New Order”.
Após a queda do muro, uma larga cultura ocidental invadiu Berlim, e embora o Techno emergisse, Paul procurava um som diferente, mais único. Utilizando duas plataformas giratórias velhas, criou suas primeiras fitas de remix com suas ideias. Em Março de 1991, seu estilo único de música foi tocado pela primeira vez ao público no clube “Tresor” em Berlim.
Nesse mesmo período, Paul começou a escrever as suas primeiras composições. A sua primeira produção “Perfect Day”, feita em conjunto com Cosmic Baby como "Visions of Shiva", foi lançado em 1992. Em 1993, fez nome com o remix de Humate's "Love Simulation", ao mesmo tempo que tocava no clube noturno “E-Werk” em Berlim. No ano seguinte, gravou o álbum "45 RPM".
Nos anos seguintes, Paul ganhou respeito remixando músicas de vários artistas de nome, como Inspiral Carpets, Sven Vätch, Curve e New Order. Isto ocorreu até o lançamento de seu segundo álbum, "Seven Ways", que o estabilizou como um dos grandes artistas electrónicos.

Na época do lançamento “Out There & Back” em 2000, ficou claro que o músico de Berlim tinha mais a oferecer do que sua assinatura de club sets e remixes já haviam definido, como um dos mais influentes DJs alemães de todos os tempos.
A sua primeira compilação mix, o CD “The Politcs of dancing” saiu em 2001 e 2005, seguido de “Global” (DVD) em 2003.
Hoje, a sua agenda de tours está sempre cheia, com concertos nos principais locais de Londres, Tel-Aviv, Cidade do México, Nova York, Singapore, etc.
Apesar disso tudo, Berlim é sempre Berlim.

From early Berlin techno and house through to progressive trance, producer/DJ Paul Van Dyk has soundtracked the German electronic dance scene ever since he moved to the city and began mixing in 1988. A native of a German town near Frankfurt, Van Dyk first heard house music on the radio during the mid-'80s. Soon he was experimenting with a rudimentary turntable setup, and after hitting Berlin, he gigged around the city. By 1991, he had appeared at the legendary Tresor club; he later set up his own E-Werk club, and debuted on record as Visions of Shiva, with fellow trance wizard Cosmic Baby. He remixed for New Order, Humate, Sven Väth, and others, then signed to the German MFS Records for his first album, 1994's 45 RPM. By the midpoint of the 1990s, Paul Van Dyk had become a globe-trotting DJ and remixer. His second album, Seven Ways, resulted in British and German dance-chart entries for the singles "Beautiful Place," "Forbidden Fruit," and "Words." While both of his albums were issued in America during 1998, Van Dyk added a remix collection (Perspective) and mix album (Vorsprung Dyk Technik) to his discography. 2000 saw the release of the single "Tell Me Why (The Riddle)," the album Out There and Back, and the EP We Are Alive. As a follow-up to global club dates in support of those releases, Van Dyk released another EP, Columbia, in mid-2001. After a relatively quiet 2002 (on the recording front), Van Dyk returned with a mix-album/greatest-hits/DVD (Global), the soundtrack to a film (Zurdo), and a new production album (Reflections). The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 2 arrived in 2005.

A progressive trance DJ and producer whose cinematic sound is influenced by synth pioneers like Klaus Schulze and Jean-Michel Jarre, Armin van Buuren enjoys worldwide recognition and a frantic schedule that takes him all over the globe. Born on December 25, 1976, in Leiden, Holland, his father was an avid record buyer and Armin became interested in music at an early age. A close friend introduced him to the world of dance music, and the Dutch DJ and remixer Ben Liebrand quickly became his main inspiration. It lead van Buuren to start investigating the roots of the electronic music he was becoming fond of, and numerous Jarre and Schulze CDs were acquired. Computers and turntables were also purchased, and creating his own music became a priority. In 1995 van Buuren attended the Leiden University and a local student club provided the venue for his first DJ gigs. The same year he was fortunate enough to have some demos included on compilations, and when the money came in, it was rolled back into producing 12"s. Cyber Records released his first hit, "Blue Fear," in 1995, and by 1999 his "Communication" was successful enough to get him signed to AM:PM. He also formed his own label, Armid, in 1999 and met Dave Lewis, a man responsible for jump-starting the careers of DJ Tiësto and Ferry Corsten. A collaboration with Tiësto yielded his biggest hit yet on Armid, "Eternity," and marathon five-hour sets brought him more attention. High-profile remixes of Madison Avenue's "Don't Call Me Baby" and Wamdue Project's "King of My Castle" followed, and numerous mix CDs were released on United Recordings. 2002 found him placing number five in DJ Magazine's Top 100 and hosting his own weekly show on the Dutch ID&T radio station. By the end of 2003 he found time to set the worldwide record for longest DJ set (12 and a half hours at a club in The Hague), finish his law degree, and release his first non-mix CD, 76.

Responsável um grande número de músicas originais, produções e remisturas, tornou-se num dos DJs mais populares da actualidade. Para além dos seus trabalhos solo, Tiësto é reconhecido pela sua colaboração em projectos com outros DJs e produtores, como Gouryella (juntamente com Ferry Corsten) e Kamaya Painters (com Benno De Goeij).
Em Portugal, contribuíram especialmente para o aumento da sua popularidade, os seus dois gigantescos concertos em Amesterdão (ambos editados em DVD), em 2003 e 2004, e a sua presença no evento Olá Love 2 Dance - In The Sky em Lisboa, em Maio de 2005.

Highly regarded by both DJ Magazine and ultra-loyal fans, DJ Tiësto, due in part to his legendary six-hour, energetic live sets, has been elevated to mythical status as one of the world's foremost trance DJs. A native of Breda, Netherlands (born Tijs Verwest on January 17, 1969), Tiësto first starting playing out at a well-known club in his hometown called the Sprock. Discovered there by the GM of Rotterdam-based Basic Beat Recordings, Tiësto released his first of five mix CDs as a part of the label's Forbidden Paradise series. Coupled by quick success and his accelerated work ethic, Tiësto soon partnered with Arny Bink and, in late 1997, started Black Hole Recordings as a private label for his productions and mixes which became the birthplace for both his Space Age and revered Magik series (volume seven hit during the summer of 2001). In addition to these acclaimed series, Black Hole also brought the world the first mix compilations from artists such as Ferry Corsten, Johan Gielen, and Armin Van Buuren, and introduced yet another prized series called In Trance We Trust. Relentless global touring ensued and, in three short years, the world outside Holland took notice with Nettwerk finally signing him to a stateside deal.
